One of the great things about Clean Indie Reads is that we have real live best-selling authors in our midst who are willing to share some of their expertise with the rest of us. Richard Houston is one such man. He regularly answers technical questions about formatting Word files, creating and modifying ebook files, and navigating some of KDP’s confusing menus. There have also been several times when he had members send their files so he could try to fix them. When someone is willing to do that kind of service for a fellow author, it is an enormous relief. The tech end of indie publishing can be very daunting. “I also try to post articles from other forums or websites that help all of us with editing, formatting, marketing, and other information I think is helpful to Indies trying to make sense of this business.” Richard goes on to say, “I’ve come to think of CIR members as part of my family, and there is nothing I wouldn’t do for family.”
That loyal, helpful personality shines through in his USA Today best-selling cozy mystery To Die For series about Jake Martin and his sleuthing dog, Fred. Ironically, for all the mysteries Richard writes, his favorite authors come from other shelves in the book store. “In no particular order they are Anne Tyler, Ken Follett, John Steinbeck, and Stephen King.” Maybe some day, he will have that kind of name recognition status, too. After all, he’s been doing this for a while. “I wrote my first book at five, or so my mother tells me. It was about a dog of course.”
